CMS acknowledges teen drug use, will stock all public schools with Narcan

Teens and drugs. The phrase has long gone together, but, nowadays, each puff passed, pill crushed and line sniffed threatens death, not a shaking finger.

In response to the bleak reality students face — where deadly opioids like fentanyl are easy to get and even harder to escape — the overdose reversal drug naloxone will soon be stocked in every Charlotte public school.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the plan Tuesday, which was the first time the district openly addressed the topic of drug use among students.

‘No cap’: CMPD’s new fentanyl awareness campaign uses slang to reach young people

Fentanyl overdose deaths are up 20% from last year, police say. CMPD’s new campaign hopes to reach younger people through slang used by teens.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police launched a new fentanyl awareness campaign Thursday called, “No Cap, Those Pills are Sus,” designed to reduce overdose deaths that have been labeled a crisis in the Charlotte area.

The campaign’s name uses slang in an effort to target young people and their families, according to CMPD. The main goal of this campaign is to prevent overdose deaths through education with younger people who are unaware of the risks of fentanyl. CMPD says it has seen a 20% increase in confirmed fentanyl overdoses this year compared to 2022. The majority of those deaths (60%) are people who were younger than 40.

Boone Police issues PSA after responding to four overdose calls Saturday

BOONE — The Boone Police Department has issued a public service announcement after officers responded to four overdose calls on Saturday, July 1.

“These were very serious cases and we came very close to losing a young man. We suspect fentanyl may be involved,” the department stated. “If you have never had to tell parents that their child is gone, consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately, we have lost count on how many times we have had to give parents and family members the worst news of their life, and we hope not to have to do it again today.

The department stated officers spend a lot of time and effort to arrest and disrupt drug traffickers and have a good deal of success intercepting shipments before it arrives in Boone, but cannot get it all.

“While I don’t condone the use of illegal substances, we care about everyone in our community, including those who struggle with addiction,” Boone Police Chief Andy Le Beau said. “Our goal is to save lives by encouraging users to get help and to bring drug dealers to justice.”
