Craven County deputies charge Havelock man in New Bern woman’s overdose death

A Havelock man has been charged with felony death by distribution following an investigation into the fatal drug overdose of a New Bern woman, according to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said its Criminal Investigation Bureau charged Thomas John Fogle Jr., 38, of Derrick Circle, on July 30. Deputies said the charge is related to the overdose death of 32-year-old Amber Ryan of New Bern.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined Fogle sold illegal narcotics to Ryan. Deputies said Ryan’s autopsy report confirmed her cause of death was a drug overdose.

The sheriff’s office said Fogle was already in custody when he was charged with felony death by distribution.

At the time, Fogle was in custody on several other charges, including:

  • Trafficking methamphetamine, two felony counts
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, two felony counts
  • Selling a Schedule II controlled substance
  • Delivering a Schedule II controlled substance
  • Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana
  • Possession of a Schedule II controlled substance
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Altering or removing a gun serial number
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Fogle is being held at the Craven County Confinement Facility under no bond.

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A Pamlico County man and woman are in jail under multi-million dollar bonds after their arrest on Wednesday for drug trafficking.

The Neuse River Narcotics Task Force stopped a vehicle on U.S. 70 near the Tuscarora Rhems Road exit.

Inside were Choncey Sawyer, Jenna Barnes, and a three-year-old child, along with fentanyl and cocaine, according to deputies.

Sawyer, 34, of Bayboro, is charged with two felony counts trafficking fentanyl, felony conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sale, & deliver fentanyl, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sale, & deliver cocaine, felony maintaining a vehicle for sale of controlled substance, and felony exposing a child to control substances.

The 30-year-old Barnes, of Grantsboro, is charged with two felony counts trafficking fentanyl, felony conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sale, & deliver fentanyl, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sale, & deliver cocaine, felony maintaining a vehicle for sale of controlled substance, and felony exposing a child to control substances.

The two were charged under a new law that makes it a felony for anyone to allow someone under 16 to be exposed to drugs.

Sawyer, who was already awaiting trial on other drug charges, was given a $4-million bond, while Barnes is being held on a $2-million bond.

The child was turned over to family members, according to deputies.

A Jacksonville man has been arrested and charged in relation to a 2024 overdose death in Vanceboro.

Robert Brinson Moore Jr

Robert Brinson Moore Jr., 43, was arrested on Nov. 28 by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Bureau, in collaboration with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations.

Moore’s arrest is in relation to the Sept. 14, 2024 overdose death of Morgana-Don Maliha Mahmud, 24, of Vanceboro.

Authorities say that at the time of his arrest, Moore had cocaine in possession.

Moore is currently confined in the Craven County Confinement Facility under no bond.

Greenville woman charged in 2023 overdose death of man found in vehicle

A Greenville woman has been arrested and charged in Craven County related to the overdose death of a Rocky Run Road man in Dec. 2023.

Amy Sue Gunter, 47, was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 9 after an investigation by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

In late December 2023 a man was found deceased in his vehicle at a Rocky Run Road residence. The death appeared to be the result of an overdose, and the North Carolina State Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed the death was from a fentanyl overdose.

Officials say that an investigation revealed the victim had purchased narcotics from Gunter prior to his death.

Gunter has been charged with the following:

  • Felony Sell and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance

Gunter was being held at the Craven County Detention Center on a $100,000 secured bond as of Jan. 9.
