Man charged with selling drugs after fatal overdose at Raleigh nightclub

Luis Baez-Roman was arrested and charged with trafficking schedule I, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintain vehicle for the distribution of controlled substances.

Raleigh police have arrested a man after they say someone died after buying drugs from him at a Raleigh nightclub earlier this month.

Luis Baez-Roman was arrested and charged with trafficking schedule I, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintain vehicle for the distribution of controlled substances.

On July 15, Raleigh police learned that an overdose victim had purchased drugs from inside Insomnia, a nightclub on Fenton Street. Documents show the drug used was most likely heroin.

Baez-Roman, 30, was on probation and is a known dealer, according to the ALE. The ALE reached out to the owner of Insomnia to ask about security footage but the owner said the club didn’t have any because their cameras erase after 24 hours.

Warrants showed that a special agent attempted to meet Baez-Roman under the guise of a drug deal and met him in the Walmart parking lot on New Hope Church Road. A special agent texted a phone number provided to the agency of the suspected dealer and asked to purchase $60 worth of heroin.

ALE agents detained Baez-Roman outside his car and an agent called the same number provided to them. Baez-Roman’s cell phone rang upon receiving the call.

Inside the car, authorities found $21,637 in cash and small packets of meth and heroin and cocaine.

A search of his residence led authorities to find 710 glycine bags and 22 grams of methamphetamine.

Baez-Roman is in jail under a $345,000 bond. Court documents showed he was convicted of selling and possessing fentanyl in 2023.

A man was killed at Insomnia in May 2023. In 2024, the club has had to pay fines to the ABC Commission for violating alcohol sales laws on two occasions.
