Triangle families ask for more to protect lives from Fentanyl

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Mitchico Duff described her daughter as kind and loving. Two years ago, Duff said she tragically lost her daughter, 22-year-old Machiko La’deja Duff, from fentanyl.

“I don’t want another mom to feel the way I feel, this is a nightmare, this is torture…” said Duff while attending a fentanyl awareness event Saturday near Downtown Raleigh.

“It took us a year to really find out what happened,” the Johnston County mother added. “We knew it was drugs involved but we didn’t know to the extent of what.”

Man charged from Hillsborough woman’s opioid overdose

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A man was arrested in connection with an opioid overdose in May.

Walter Wrenn of Efland was arrested on a charge of felony death by distribution on Friday.

Wrenn, 36, was already incarcerated in the Orange County Jail for unrelated charges. Wrenn is being held under a $100,000 secured bond.

Woman arrested in connection with drug overdose in Sanford

SANFORD, N.C. — A woman was charged Wednesday with death by distribution years after a man who suffered a drug overdose was found dead in the woods.

On Sept. 28, 2020, deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Sanford home after receiving a call about a missing person. Deputies searched land and water around the home for Cory Dale Moore, 32, but were unsuccessful.

Narcan Vending Machine in Orange County

This new vending machine in Orange County could save opioid users’ lives

Narcan Nasal Spray

People who use opioids and are at-risk of an accidental overdose can now get a life-saving overdose reversal kit — from a local vending machine.

The Orange County jail has become one of the few facilities in the state to offer free Narcan nasal spray for drug overdoses, county officials announced.

Narcan, a medicine used to quickly treat an opioid overdose, is available 24 hours a day in a vending machine in the lobby of the Orange County Detention Center at 1200 U.S. 70 West in Hillsborough.

With a solemn but hopeful yes, Wake leaders put the county’s first dollars from the national opioid settlement into action Tuesday night. “We’re taking a comprehensive approach to get folks on the path to recovery,” said Denise Forman, assistant Wake County manager.

Death-by-distribution law yields seven prosecutions in region to date

Since it went into effect late in 2019, authorities in the Tri-County region have lodged death-by-distribution charges seven times against people they believe sold drugs to people who later died of an overdose.
